I had a few more experiments planned, but we ran out of time. On top of everything else, it was about this time that the tornado sirens went off. 9 boys + my own 3 children took off for the basement. Luckily, the siren only lasted about 30 seconds. It rained a lot that night, but we were very fortunate because the rain stopped long enough for us to cook the hot dogs on the grill and then stopped again in time for us to do the diet coke/Mentos experiment.
After we were all done, we went inside for cake & ice cream. We had an eyeball cake (with red velvet cake inside to make it look red like blood). For party favors, we gave the boys pop rocks, gummy rats, glow sticks, nerds candy, and silly string. They also got to take home their goggles. My thought was to send the boys outside with their silly string until their parents arrived to get them, but because of the rain, we never had the chance.
It was such a fun night, the time went by so fast and it was so fun to see so much enthusiasm from the the kids. I still can't believe how easy and cheap it was to do everything, especially since we already had so much of the stuff on hand. And there are so many good ideas on the internet. The only thing that might have helped was to have another adult or two on hand. Sam had invited his primary teacher, Brother Ash, to come and I am so glad that he did. I don't know what we would have done without his help. Olivia has already asked if she can do a Mad Scientist party for her birthday. We only do parties every other year so luckily I have another 18 months until we do this again.

Oh my GOSH. Seriously? You go ALL OUT for the birthdays. You are always so creative with it. I love all of this. And it's given me some great ideas to entertain my boys this summer!! I bet Sam LOVED this so much.
