Behind our house, we have an old garage (76 years old - It used to be an old carriage house if that tells you how old it was). This was the location of our mad scientist creepy laboratory (it didn't take much to make that place look creepy). Decorations were super easy. We used a microscope/science kit that Sam had on hand, filled old canning jars & juice bottles with colored water, weeds, & bugs and printed off signs on the computer.
If you cut open a highlighter marker there is a sponge in plastic casing inside. Cut this open and let the sponge soak in water for a couple of hours. Use a black light to make it all glow.
The Party
When the boys first arrived, we started off with a screaming balloon activity. This kept them busy until the hot dogs were done (Sam's favorite - hot dogs with no bun). After dinner, the boys were instructed to proceed to the security check-in. Jeremy (in his lab coat) sat at his desk and used a retinal scanner (homemade of course) and then the computer welcomed and instructed the boys to proceed to the top secret laboratory out back (yes you can make your computer talk -it's very cool and easy). On their way out, the boys were each given a pair of safety goggles (donated very generously by Lowes) and a pair of latex gloves.

A few years ago, Sam bought a microscope/science kit at a garage sale. He begged me to find things to use for it, so I came up with an experiment activity that is now one of their favorite things to do. Take an ice cube tray and fill each cup with odds and ends from the kitchen - cinnamon & other spices, ketchup, vinegar, chocolate milk mix, mustard, etc., the stranger or stinkier the better. I also have some medicine droppers and mixing spoons that the kids used to mix everything together into gross concoctions. This was our first laboratory experiment of the night and it went really well. Many of the boys were even brave enough to taste their experiments. We included poprocks, baking soda and vinegar so they could make their experiments bubble. We had a hard time getting the boys to move on to the next activity!
