The National Endowment for the arts estimates that the average adult has read only 6 of the top 100 books..

I have read 32 and intend to read a whole bunch more. I must admit that a lot of these books I read in school, but I'm glad that I had that exposure. My dad was always trying to get us to read the classics too, he got me hooked on the JRR Tolkien stuff and he is a big fan of Dickens. Growing up, our first dog was named Lucie Manette, from a Tale of Two Cities. Unfortunatley, she didn't live very long. Our next dog was named Louisa May (after Alcott, the author of Little Women). As a note, I read Dracula 2 years ago when I was in a really great book club. I read it with a great deal of hesitation, I am admittedly a huge chicken, but the book wasn't very scary, it was actually more of a love story. As I look over this list, so many of these are on my all time favorites list - Pride & Prejudice of course, Vanity Fair, Jane Erye, but I hated Tess of the D'Urbervilles. I am probably the only person who has not yet read Harry Potter. I have the books... maybe one of these days.
